The Binding SeaDesigner: Karin Oshima

- Jewelry design background
While the continents of the world are separate, the sea binds them together.
On the upper left a white wave, on the lower right the turquoise sea, while Japan lies in the center where the two meet. Having endured a massive earthquake last year, Japan has a message to broadcast to the world: a message of bonds between human beings, of love, and of bonds between humans and nature. I believe this message has the power to calm the waves of turmoil that sweep our turbulent world.
Two years ago I visited the “phantom island” of the Yaeyama archipelago in Okinawa Prefecture, a sandbar surrounded by unspoiled sea. I was overwhelmed by the beautiful color of this sea, like crystal-clear green gelatin.

At the same time I recalled a previous visit to Tahiti. I thought, “I want to preserve this marvelous sea, which is every bit as beautiful as the Tahiti that captivated Paul Gauguin.
I aimed for a universal quality that transcends time and space, making this jewelry suitable for all kinds of parties or events whether the wearer is a Japanese person representing the nation, or a non-Japanese lover of Japan. The design blends a modern feel with traditional Japanese elements and an art deco sensibility.
The beauty of the piece is the beauty of balance and moderation, neither overly subdued nor gaudy.
As I intended to express the open sea, I avoided filling the space with too many stones, and placed the stones so as to have a random yet harmoniously lovely appearance.
Close examination will reveal precise attention to detail, in the replication of the texture of beach sand, the placement of stones, and so on.
Materials: Diamonds, Paraiba tourmaline, freshwater pearls, gold, 18K
“Iridegnita” is a portmanteau word combining the Italian iride, meaning “rainbow,” with “dignity.”
Jewelry by Iridegnita is ideal for people of strong and determined will. The word “dignity” implies the power and pride that mature adults possess.
The strong will, determination, faith and powerful emotions that allow us to shape our own destinies go together to make a seven-hued rainbow that acts as a bridge to a boundless future. Iridegnita is by your side as you cross this rainbow bridge, at the end of which await each of the dreams that you bear through life with pride and prestige.
The true value of Iridegnita jewelry is that it guides you through life powerfully, nobly and with pride and optimism based on the courage of your convictions.
Jewelry by Iridegnita is not only beautiful for its precious stones and metals. It is a collection of powerful items that guide elegant and sophisticated adult women and men with leadership qualities toward the fulfillment of their dreams.
Iridegnita will continue to grow proudly as a company that builds rainbow bridges to the fulfillment of dreams for each and every customer that wears our jewelry.
My designs are intuitively inspired by my experiences as a volunteer both in Japan and overseas. I believe jewelry born of real life experiences is not just a lifeless assemblage of stones and metals on a tabletop, but has the power to connect with and inspire its wearers.
Thus far I have visited Europe, North Africa, Asia, North America, Oceania and the South Pacific, etc.: 28 countries and 75 cities in all.
I received a thematic category prize at the 2012 JJA Jewellery Design Awards.
I work based on the concept of creating jewelry that represents Japan to the world.
Craftsmen with impeccable technical skills and delicate sensibilities, which qualify them to provide goods to luxury jewelry boutiques, manufacture Iridegnita jewelry.
